FIAD Joins Global Call for AI to Respect Copyright and Intellectual Property

FIAD has joined 38 international organisations representing all sectors of the creative and cultural industries in co-signing a joint statement ahead of the Paris 2025 AI Action Summit. The statement underscores the need for artificial intelligence (AI) model providers to respect copyright and intellectual property rights, ensuring a responsible and fair digital environment for rightsholders.

The statement builds upon key international commitments, including:

  • The OECD’s Principles for a Responsible Approach in Support of Trustworthy AI (May 2024), which highlight respect for the rule of law, transparency, and accountability.

  • The UN General Assembly’s Declaration on AI (March 2024), which encourages safeguards to protect intellectual property rights while promoting innovation.

  • The G7 Hiroshima AI Process, which resulted in guiding principles and a voluntary Code of Conduct requiring AI models to respect privacy and intellectual property rights.

  • The G7 Culture Ministers’ Declaration (September 2024), which reaffirms that AI developers should comply with legal frameworks and implement safeguards to respect copyright-protected content.

  • The Italian G7 Presidency’s Reporting Framework (December 2024), aimed at monitoring compliance with the Hiroshima Process International Code of Conduct.

Key Principles for AI and Copyright

The signatories of the statement reaffirm the fundamental principle that AI models must respect copyright and related rights by diligently seeking and adhering to the express wishes of rightsholders. Transparency is essential, ensuring that rightsholders have full visibility on the copyrighted works and content used to train AI models. Furthermore, AI model operators should establish a licensing framework that includes properly negotiated authorisations with rightsholders. Creators and rights holders must receive fair and appropriate remuneration for the use of their works. Lastly, to uphold these principles effectively, there must be strong enforcement measures in place to penalise non-compliance.

As AI continues to evolve, FIAD remains committed to ensuring that technological advancements do not come at the expense of the respect of intellectual property rights. We call on policymakers and AI developers to uphold these principles and work towards a fair and transparent AI ecosystem that respects copyright.
